Update on versions - has also been observed to fail on 9.3.2. This problem appears to have started on the 23rd sometime. No response from Microsoft as of yet.

right, thanks for that.  It confirms at least it's not a dodgy
[mis]configuration on my part, which was my assumption to start with.

What's interesting is that 'dig +trace hotmail.co.uk' works fine,
whereas bind itself fails to make contact.

What version of bind do you see (and not see) the problem with?  

Here it's 9.2.4. on both servers, and neither can resolve
hotmail.co.uk.
