According to msnhst at microsoft.com, this problem should now be fixed (that's the extent of the communication I received, in fact. We've since removed "query-source address * port 53" from our confs, which did workaround the problem, so can't yet provide independent verification.

right, thanks for that.  It confirms at least it's not a dodgy
[mis]configuration on my part, which was my assumption to start with.

What's interesting is that 'dig +trace hotmail.co.uk' works fine,
whereas bind itself fails to make contact.

What version of bind do you see (and not see) the problem with?  

Here it's 9.2.4. on both servers, and neither can resolve
hotmail.co.uk.
