Yes, I typically (when debugging) use an external flash stick.

When I was in Paris, I bought a used Lenovo R400 laptop for 260eu,
on the 'street of the chinese vendors'. It has an expresscard slot, 4GB
of ram, dvd, etc....

off-lease lenovos are very common, very cheap, yet very robust, and
generally 'just work' with linux.
As much as I like the macbook air, the three button mouse and thumb thingi
makes X tolerable...
